Stereo measured the frequency response as ☓.5dB from 45hz-20khz. Boosting the bass knob helps somewhat, but like most bass controls, it doesn't really affect the lower bass. The original reason that I disassembled the amp was to determine if there were any level controls for the subwoofer, but as you can see by my pics, that doesn't appear to be the case. I'm not talking specifically about bass extension, but bass level overall. Treble is very bright (possibly even too bright), midrange is well defined, but bass output appears lacking.

Satellite speakers are made of some sort of composite, possibly the same as those used in the Cambridge Ensemble speakers. Since green appears to be used for ground/common, my assumption is that the frequency division for the sub and satellites is done on the power amp board.

I assume that the white, red and green wires are the inputs to the power amp. The board to the left (the one with the pots mounted to it) is the preamp board. I couldn't get a great picture of it, but you can see part of one under the large capacitor. The bottom board appears to be the power amp section, it has three six-leg devices, which I assume are some sort of dual-transistor thing. The power transformer also seems to have a choke integrated into it on the right side (red wire going through the cores). Also note that at this late date (1989 or 1990) they are still using some point to point wiring. Here it is with the subpanel removed (I did this so I could Deoxit the controls). This was not done by me it appears to be a side effect of assembly (probably used a deep socket to tighten the nuts). Note the square bumpers to separate it from the front. The black front panel is held on by five knurled nuts attached to the pots and input selector. The way the amp is built makes it look more like a prototype than a production product. As far as I know the amp was assembled in the US. Balance, bass and treble knobs have very strong detents at the 12:00 position but movement is smooth.Īnd here are some nudies, because we love those. The case is a single piece of rolled steel. It actually looks like the little brother of the Advent 300 receiver, which is over a decade older. The amplifier (the heaviest part of the system, other than possibly the case itself, and the transformer is the heaviest part of the amp) is so obviously a Henry Kloss product, you can actually imagine him sketching it out. The 'rap test' demonstrates that the sides of the case are well damped. They don't easily loosen, and each one is connected to a steel bracket that appears to be attached directly to the case. It's unclear what the black knobs are for (I don't have the user manual and it's not online as far as I can tell). Here are both sides so you can see the cutouts:

This makes packing everything up more difficult than it needs to be. Unfortunately the belts use buckles that are slightly too narrow, rather than Velcro (yes, Velcro was around back then). Presumably the belt could be used to strap in a portable CD player (there is a cutout in the foam on the other half). Here's what it looks like once you open it up (I assume it was much more neatly packed when it was new). I've wanted one of these ever since it was a current product in the early 1990s, and when I found one cheap on Craigslist, I had to grab it. The speaker is spec'ed as a 7' driver it has a stamped steel frame, rubber surround and doped paper cone. The only thing from the outside that identifies it is a speaker on one side. The case looks like an old-fashioned briefcase, with faux-leather sides, or maybe like an old portable open reel deck or projector. Actually, it's only a subwoofer in the modern sense, since it doesn't go down to subwoofer frequencies it's more like a bass module, similar to what Bose provides with their Acoustimass system, but for convenience, I'll continue to refer to it as a subwoofer. The Cambridge Soundworks Model 11 is a transportable stereo system that includes a subwoofer with handle, amplifier and satellite speakers that pack inside the subwoofer's case.
